The Benchmark Robusto
Some cigars are famous. A few are essential. The Partagás Serie D No. 4 belongs firmly in the second group — a cigar so consistent, so widely loved, and so true to its marca that many enthusiasts treat it as the yardstick against which every other Cuban Robusto is measured.
A short history
The Serie D No. 4 was released as a limited run in the early 1990s before joining the regular Partagás portfolio, where it quickly became the brand’s flagship Robusto. Partagás itself dates to 1845, one of the oldest continuously produced Havana marcas, and its house style has always leaned toward power: deep, earthy, spicy tobacco with real backbone. The Serie D No. 4 distils that identity into a single, approachable format.
The vitola
At a 50 ring gauge and 124mm (4.9 inches), the No. 4 is a classic Robusto — short enough to enjoy in under an hour, substantial enough to deliver a full arc of flavour. That combination is exactly why it has endured. It fits a lunch break, an after-dinner hour, or a first cigar of the evening equally well.
Tasting notes
Expect a firm, well-packed draw. The first third opens on espresso and toasted cedar, with a peppery edge that announces the Partagás character straight away. Through the second third the cigar deepens into leather, dark cocoa and a touch of earth, the spice softening into warmth rather than sharpness. The final third is where the No. 4 rewards patience: a long, rounded finish of coffee and bittersweet chocolate that lingers well after the last draw. Medium-to-full in body — enough presence to satisfy experienced smokers, not so much that it overwhelms.
How to smoke it
Give it a slow, deliberate light and don’t rush the draw; the No. 4 smokes best at an unhurried pace. A freshly delivered box benefits from a week’s rest in the humidor before you light one, and boxes aged one to three years round out beautifully, trading some of the youthful pepper for sweetness and polish.
What to drink with it
Its coffee-and-cocoa core makes it a natural partner for a well-aged dark rum or a cup of strong espresso. If you prefer whisky, reach for something with body but not too much smoke — a Speyside single malt or a rich bourbon complements the cigar without fighting it.
Why we chose it this month
Availability and consistency. Some cigars are wonderful but scarce; the Serie D No. 4 delivers reference-grade Cuban flavour reliably, box after box. If you are building a humidor, this is a cornerstone — the “house Cuban” every collection should have on hand.
